702 SUNSET RESIDENCE
Albuquerque, NM
2010
The residence at 702 Sunset located in Albuquerque’s South Valley was initially constructed in the mid 1950s. To accommodate the Clients growing family the original 950 square foot footprint generated a need to expand and create a more functional space for entertaining and raising a family. The site is located west of the Rio Grande River Valley, a location rich with mature cottonwood trees and natural wildlife. The Clients desire to remain in this area fostered their interest in renovating and adding onto the existing structure. A centralized cottonwood tree with unique character became an important aspect of this project. The dynamic of the space beneath the cottonwood and allowing adequate room for the tree roots in order to preserve its viability were an essential aspect of the design process. The Architect and Clients integrated the design around the existing tree and blended the addition into the natural environment with minimal disruption.
